Why is Everyone Suddenly "Demure"?
At first I thought it was just me, until a friend over on Facebook asked why there was a sudden surge in the use of the word demure.
Over the last two weeks the word has been up and down my Instagram feed, with people using it to describe their behavior, makeup, and even their attire. And you and I both know, people will hammer a word or phrase into the ground once it becomes a trend, without ever knowing the meaning. Remember just two months ago the aesthetic word to describe fashion was “mob wives”.
So before we get started on why the word demure is trending, let’s first take a look at what it means.
What Does Webster Have to Say About Demure
According to Webster Dictionary, the word demure is a late Middle English, perhaps Old French word that was influenced by the Latin word maturus, which means ‘ripe or mature’. The world demure is an adjective that means reserved, modest, and shy. It is typically used when describing a woman.
Now that we know what the word demure means and where it derived from, let’s talk about how it started trending on social media and is now being used up and down my social media feeds.
Why is Everyone Suddenly Demure
We can thank TikTok influencer, Jools Lebron for bringing the word demure back to life a few weeks ago, with a satirical video. But hold on…did you know this isn’t the 1st time the word has gone viral? Back in 2020/2021 another TikTok influencer that goes by the name Selyna (you know all the trends start on the ‘clock’ platform first) first used the word as a description of themselves and it took off.
Selyna has since gone public, claiming that Jools stole their content. Yes honey, the girls are fighting. I’ve seen both videos and honestly, I think Jools did it better - which is why the word demure is trending on ALL social media platforms, and not just TikTok.

When Will This End
Now do I think half of the people now using the word are really living up to the definition? Hell no! But when you live in a world that rotates around clickbait, viral moments, and catch phrases- everybody and their mama is about to be demure around here at least for the next month!
